Same 4D First-Prize Number, Different Payouts? Big vs Small Explained

Why does one person receive RM2,500 for matching a 4D first-prize number, while another receives RM3,500? Besides the amount recorded on the ticket, another key factor is whether the entry falls under “Big” or “Small”.

These names can be confusing. “Big” may sound like it offers a bigger prize, while “Small” may suggest a smaller amount. In fact, they refer to two different prize structures, with different prize categories and payouts.

This article uses the standard prize structure published by Sports Toto to explain the difference. Other games and entry types have their own rules.

Understand 4D Big vs Small, compare prize categories and clear up common payout confusion.

What Do Big and Small Mean in 4D?

“Big” and “Small” are common terms used in four-digit lottery games. Big covers the first, second and third prizes, as well as Special and Consolation prizes. Small covers only the first, second and third prizes, with no Special or Consolation payouts. Both refer to the same draw results but follow different payout structures. The names do not refer to how high or low the four-digit number is. They also do not mean there are separate sets of draw results.

Big vs Small Prize Comparison

According to Sports Toto’s standard 4D prize table, the following payouts apply per RM1 entry in the relevant category:

Prize CategoryBigSmall
First PrizeRM2,500RM3,500
Second PrizeRM1,000RM2,000
Third PrizeRM500RM1,000
Special PrizeRM180Not applicable
Consolation PrizeRM60Not applicable

As the table shows, Small offers higher payouts for the top three prizes but does not include Special or Consolation prizes. Big covers more prize categories, which explains why “Big” does not necessarily mean a higher first-prize payout.

Why Is There a RM1,000 Difference for the Same First Prize?

On the same RM1 basis, the first-prize payout is RM2,500 for Big and RM3,500 for Small—a difference of RM1,000. This comes from the published prize structure, rather than one ticket being “luckier” or the payout being decided after the draw.

Two people receiving different amounts for matching the same operator’s first-prize number in the same draw does not necessarily mean there is a payout error. A fair comparison requires checking whether both tickets have the same entry type and amount.

A Number Appearing in the Results Does Not Always Mean a Winning Ticket

Another common source of confusion is seeing a ticket’s number listed under Special or Consolation prizes without receiving a payout. Under the rules explained above, Big includes these categories, while Small does not.

This means a number appearing in the results and a ticket qualifying for a prize are two different things. The prize categories covered by the ticket also matter. It is an easy detail to miss when reading a winning story: simply saying someone “matched the number” may not fully explain the amount received.

Box Entries and Jackpots Have Different Prize Structures

Besides Big and Small, tickets may involve other games or entry types with different payout calculations. For example, Magnum’s official guide explains standard entries and mBox separately, with a dedicated prize table for mBox. Even when the same four-digit number is involved, the standard first-prize payout may not be the right basis for comparison. Source: Magnum’s official 4D Classic guide

When reading about large lottery wins, it is also worth checking whether the report refers to a standard four-digit prize or a jackpot game with separate winning conditions. Otherwise, it is easy to confuse payouts from different products.

Understanding a Payout Takes More Than Checking the First-Prize Number

The key to understanding 4D Big and Small is knowing both which prize categories are covered and how much each category pays. Matching the same number is only one part of the comparison. The operator, draw, game type and entry amount also matter.

Small’s higher payouts for the top three prizes do not make a number more likely to be drawn. Likewise, Big’s inclusion of Special and Consolation prizes does not guarantee a win in every draw.
